Summer is a wonderful time to visit here! There's just so much to do! In addition to all the activities listed on this page, there's lots to do without moving your car. Of course, our heated pool and hot tub are very popular, as are our recreation field and lodge. Our weekly schedule does change, but here's a sample schedule to give you an idea of all there is to do: Monday Night: Welcome reception and Mt. Rainier movie. Tuesday Night: Bonfire in the field with s'mores. Wednesday Night: Wilderness BINGO with lots of fun prizes. Thursday Night: Barbecue followed by a bonfire with s'mores.. Friday Night: Mt. Rainier movie and trivia game with prizes. Saturday Night: Bonfire in the field with s'mores. Sunday Night: Barbecue followed by a bonfire with s'mores.

Mt. Rainier National Park: Most of our summer visitors come to visit Mt. Rainier, perhaps the most magical mountain in America. 14,411 feet high with the most glaciers of any mountain in the lower 48. It's good your entry fee is valid for a week since you could easily spend that long exploring this huge park. (In fact, most of our summer visitors stay anywhere from 3-14 days as there's so much to do!) We're the closest accommodations to the Sunrise area -- the area that we think has the best views and hikes in the Park. Other people agree with us. Our guests tell us Sunrise is best, and even guides who work at Mt. Rainier tend to prefer Sunrise for family visits. Why does everyone like Sunrise so much? Here are just a few reasons. - At 6400 feet, Sunrise is the highest point to which you can drive, both in the Park and in the entire Cascade range. Because it is so high, its orientation is much more parallel to the summit, meaning you get incredible panoramic views.
- Most tour buses won't drive the winding road up to Sunrise so you don't get the huge crowds you get at Paradise. In fact, most of the time you can lose many of the crowds just by hiking a little away from the parking lots.
- Sunrise gives you wonderful views of the Emmons Glacier, the largest glacier anywhere in the lower 48.
- Sunrise is on the dry side of Mt. Rainier so the trails tend to melt out earlier and stay snow-free longer than those on the Paradise side, making it better for early and late season hiking.
The turnoff for Sunrise is about 5 minutes from here. On the way to the top, you'll pass several wonderful trails that are well worth exploring. The Summerland and Owyhigh Lakes trails are two of our personal favorites. At the top of Sunrise, it's impossible to find a bad hike! The Burroughs Mountain trails are very popular with great views of Mt. Rainier, plus the Shadow Lake trail is a good place to go with kids (lots of great viewpoints along the way, and fun wading in the lake, with lots of frogs.) Berkeley Park is a wonderful place to go for waterfalls and wildflowers, and the fascinating 2-mile plateau of Grand Park is great for those looking for a long day hike. On the way to the Sunrise turnoff, you'll pass the trailhead for Crystal Lakes, a wonderful 5-mile roundtrip hike to two alpine lakes surrounded by jagged peaks. About 15 minutes from here, you'll find Chinook Pass and Tipsoo Lake with fabulous views of Mt. Rainier's summit and what may be the best wildflowers in the Park. In fact, several photographers who have stayed with us have told us the wildflowers at Tipsoo rival those they've seen anywhere! About 25 minutes from here is another wonderful area of the Park. The Ohanapecosh area has gorgeous river hikes, but is best known for its incredible "Grove of the Patriarchs", a stand of 1000 year old trees and Silver Falls, the highest volume waterfall in the Park. These are two things you don't want to miss. Once you've visited the Ohanapecosh, you can drive through Stevens Canyon and Box Canyon on your way over to Paradise. (The total mileage from Alta Crystal Resort to Paradise is 50 miles.) This drive is beautiful, and many guests tell us that the drive itself is their favorite part of the trip to Paradise. The hiking trails at Paradise tend to get crowded, so we tend to recommend hiking away from the main visitors center. (We especially like the area around Reflection Lakes.) Regardless, the Paradise Inn is reopening this summer, and is a wonderful spot to grab something to eat. For more information about the Park, click here.
| Go on a horseback ride through the national forest to majestic vistas. Crystal Mountain Outfitters has horses for rent a mere 10 minutes away. This is a wonderful adventure. They offer 1-hour to full-day rides every day from July 4 through Labor Day and many other rides are available. (Advance reservations suggested for all rides.) Click here for more information on their rates and various rides. At other times in the spring and fall, you can go horseback riding with Chinook Pass Outfitters, just about a 45-minute scenic drive across Chinook Pass from here. | There are great mountain bike trails here. Bike up Corral Pass road for great views. Take the White River trail to Snoquera Falls. Advanced riders will love the Skookum Flats trail. Mountain bikers can also enjoy Crystal Mountain's 35 miles of trails. We have some bikes for rent right at Alta Crystal Resort or you're welcome to bring your own. Many of the best trails start from here!
| In addition to being Washington's largest ski area, Crystal Mountain is a wonderful summer playground as well. Crystal has over 35 miles of hiking and biking trails to magnificent vistas, beautiful mountain lakes and wonderful picnic spots. This summer, Crystal will again be offering its famous Sunset Dinners and a new Sunday brunch in its remodeled Summit House Bistro, Washington's highest restaurant. Enjoy fine dining in Washington's highest restaurant with incredible views of Mt. Rainier. For more information, click here. The Alpine Inn Restaurant is also open every day during the summer and their food is to die for! And you can work off all that great food by playing disc golf on their 18-hole course. | There's great fishing in lakes and streams throughout the area. When you check in, we'll give you a handout with some of the local's favorite fishing spots.
| We go hiking every day of the year, so can help you find the hike that's right for you. There are miles and miles of hiking trails right from your door or you can explore farther afield. Hike to beautiful Goat Falls with your kids. Take the Noble Knob trail for something more aggressive and get great views of Mt. Rainier. Or take a leisurely stroll on one of our forest trails.
| The Windy Ridge/Spirit Lake side of Mt. St. Helens makes a great day trip. The drive is about 2 hours each way, and this area gives you the best views of the crater. During the summer, rangers give talks about the eruption throughout the day. The devastation is amazing, as is the way life is slowly coming back. Click here for more information about the Windy Ridge viewpoint. You can also take a look at Mt. St. Helens with their live volcano-cam. Click here to take a look. | click here for reservations
